ESKDALE EVENTS

AN ENJOYABLE CONCERT JUVENILE PERFORMERS From Our Own Correspondent On Friday evening last M. K. Theo. Starkey, with company of juvenile performers visited this district where they render a wealth of entertainment. In spite of counter attractions there was a large attendance. When all is taken into consideration, the standard of the concert was very high indeed, and a tribute of the highest order must be paid to Mr Starkey for the trouble he had taken to produce such a fine band of performers. During the interval Mr Starkey thanked the audience for coming along, and also stated that ihe audience wa* most considerate in its ap plause. The speaker concluded by saying that he would include Eskdale in the next tour. At the conclusion of the concert programme, Mr W. H. Phillips, on behalf of the school committee, thanked Mr Starkey for coming so far to assist the school funds.

The following programme wa* rendered:— Danse Oriental, “Pandora’s Box,” by Vera Edwards; Story without word*, “At the Carnival Competitions,” M. Fox, B. Fox, R. Woolf, N. Hodgson, G. Adams; humorous recital, “Going on an Errand,’’ Madeline Fox; song in character, “Because I was Shy,” Valda Sutton (this was the most popular item, sending the audience into fits of laughter); character recital. “Cupid, Dealer in Hearts,” Ngaire Hodgson (this item was very cleverly rendered); Shakespearian character recital, "Puck” (a saucy sprite) from “A Mid-Summer Night’s Dream,” by Elia Painter; action song in costume, “Member of the Force,” Rachel Schofield (this girl proved a popular singer); story without word*, “Getting Ready for School,” N. Hodgson and B. Woolf (this item was very well ..cted); “Basket of Flowers,’’ I. Younge; action song, “The Little Powder Puff,” B. Schofield; character dance, “Mrs Punch,” Vera Edwards; humorous musical monologue, “Girls, According to a Boy Fourteen Year* Old,” Basil Fox; acrobatic act, “Jorral Clowns,” B. Hutchinson, Valda Sutton, V. Edwards, M. Fox and M. Drummond (this also proved a popular item); character dance, “Felix the Cat,” Joy Fritchley; humorous recital, “Trials of School Life,’’ B. Woolf; humorohs stories, Laurie Scott; humorous monologue, “In the Bus.” Ngaire Hodgson; song in character, “Pickaninnies’ Paradise,’’ Valda Sutton; story without words, “At th* Dental Clinic,” M. Fox and Joy Fritehley (the up-to-date method of administering “gas’* lent much to the humour of the item). The singing of the National Anthem brought the evening to a close. THE NEW FRANCE HOUSE. The necessary foundation work of the new France House has been completed and the contractor Mr E. RockeN, hopes to have the building '-ompleted by the commencement of the next school year. The new building will oe built after the style of a bungalow. The foundations are 8-inch concrete walls reinforced throughout and the superstructure is to be in wood. The architects for the work are Messrs Finch and Westerholme. LITERARY CLUB. , At a special meeting of the Literary Club, held on Thursday last, It was decided to cary on, as in the winter months. The secretary reported that three successful concert* had been given by the dub’s concert party. It was unanimously decided to hold a picnic nt Tutira on November 12, circumstances permitting. Mr B. H. Florence gave notice of motion to the following effect: “That the committee be revised and al lunfinancial members be struck off.” Mr Satchel! was elected eesretary and Mr John Tait under-secretary to the committee. The sum of £1 16s was donated to the Westshore Methodist Church electrie light fnnd. The next meeting of the club is to be held on Tuesday November 8 at 7.30 pun.
