Mr E. Page, S.M., of Wellington, is at present on a business visit to Napier.

Mrs O. Nelson, of New Plymouth, who has been on an extended visit to Mrs W. L. Graham, of Riverslea road. Hastings, returned home by the mail train this morning.

A London cable states that Eileen, the daughter of the late Sir Arthur Myers, of New Zealand, is affianced to William, son of Mr H. Ros* Lowe, residing in Chili.

Mr T. E. Moore, of Palmerston North, has received cabled advice of the death from pneumonia of Mrs Payne, of Longfords, Mimchinhampton, Gloucestershire. Mrs Payne was the second daughter of the late Mr Frederick Bsith Meinertzhageu, of Waimaramu.

After spending over 11 weeks in th" Auckland Hospital, Mr. Thomas Joseph Grace, aged 19, Grsy Lynn, is now at his home, rapidly approaching full and complete recovery from a broken seek, Mr. Grace broke his neck while practising aerobatics on July 24.

Mr. Hutton came out in the Butemahana in 1878, and for many year he was an engineer officer in the Pen guin, being one of the survivors of that ship when she was wrecked in the Cook Strait. The veteran Is wonderfully well, despite his 83 years. He has been on a visit to his sister at Brought/ Ferry, Scotland.

Following a fortnight’s illness, Mr Stanley John Ponsonby Pickett died in a private hospital in Hamilton on Sunday, aged 43 years. Born in Reeftou. Mr. Pickett as a young man, joined th" staff of the Bank of New Zealand and was formerly located in Hamilton From there he was transferred to the Melbourne branch and then to the Levuka (Fiji) .branch. He returned to New Zealand some eight months ago and was appointed to the inspecting staff. The late Mr. Pickett, who was unmarried, served in the late war where he was badly gassod. He isurvived by two sisters residing ir England and Dunedin respectively.

Mr. O. H. Gillon, purser of the Maunganui, was taken seriously ill last Saturday while the vessel wabound from Auckland to Sydney, and was taken to hospital on her arrival at Sydney. Mr. Gillon, who is very well known to New Zealand travellers, has the distinction of having served at sea as purser for the record period of 41 years, having been appointed purser in 1889. For practically the whole of this time he has served in the Union Company’s intercolonial passenger steamers, in which he ha> travelled some 2,000,000 miles, and crossed the Tasman upward of 2001 times.

The appointment of Mr. Edwan Gilbertson, J.P., of Hobson Crescent, as coroner for Wellington, to fill tin vacancy caused by the death of Mr. 1 Salek, is announced. Mr. Gilbertson was born in London in 1855. He wa> educated at the Highgate Gramnuu School, and he later studied in Ger many and France. For some years h< was a member of the London Steel Exchange, and he came to New Zea land in 1879. Ha farmed in Hawke'f Bay for several years, and on the for mation of the Patangata County Coun cil in 1885 he became clerk and en gineer to that body. After more thar 30 years' service with the count) council Mr. Gilbertson retired, am went to live in Wellington.

The death occurred in Napier las evening of Mr. 8. A. Legge, assistau; manager of tho oil department o. Messrs. A. S. Paterson and Co., at th. age of 39 years. His death followed in juries received as the result of a fal a month ago. The late Mr. Legge eami to New Zealand from England som. time before the war and was a cadet on a station in Canterbury. He serve: with the New Zealand Expeditions, Force, and after his return from th: front entered business for himself i Christchurch. Later he joined Patei son's branch in that city and had bcc. resident in Wellington for the past fiv> years. He was a member of the Civi Service Club and the Commercia Travellers’ Club. He is survived by : widow and two children.
