MINISTER DEFINES POSITION ATTITUDE TO WHEAT DUTIES. Tauranga, Oct. 26. A meeting of the Tauranga branch of the Farmers’ Union was held on Saturday, at which the Hon. C. E. Macmillan, Minister of Agriculture, was present by Mr. Macmillan said he was entirely opposed to the relaxing of the existing regulations in any way regarding foot-and-mouth disease. As regards the wheat duties, he said he was not in favour of the present operation of the sliding scale of duties and there was room for investigation and improvement in its operations between the grower and the consumer, and he was going to have that investigation. He also defended his action against statements made by the Waikato executive of the Farmers ’ Union relative to his action in asking dairy factory suppliers for their opinion on the question of granting a licence to a cold storage company at Auckland.
