FLYING ON SUNDAY
MINISTER WANTS TEST CASE. PROVISIONS OF ACT. Twice during the past year the president of the New Zealand Aero Club, Mr. G. M. Spence, h.)s interviewed the Minister of Justice to ask that the Police Offences Act should be amended to make the intention of the Legislature clear on the subject of flying for hire on Sunday, relates the annual report of the club. On neither ’ occasion was he successful in obtaining any definite statements as to the Minister’s attitude on the question. Ultimately written application for the amendment, showing that it was only necessary to insert the word ‘‘aircraft” in the appropriate section, elicited a reply that, for reasons which were not stated, the Minister could not see his way to introduce the amendment, but suggested that this elub or one of the constituent clubs might provide facilities to enable an authoritative decision by the Supreme Court to be obtained, in view of the conflicting decisions of the magistrates on the matter. Three prosecutions, one in Wanganui, one in Auckland and one in Napier. have been instituted against pilot instructors and club officials, the two former having been dismissed by the magistrates, and the other is pending, the report states. Further representations to the Minister will be made.
