REGIMENTAL SPORTS

HELD AT WAIPUKURAU. TRAINEES ON FORM. (Special Representative.) Yesterday the First Battalion, Hawke's Bay Regiment, held a field day and sports meeting at the Waipukurau racecourse, where the men are at present undergoing a week’s training. The weather was warm and fine, and an enjoyable afternoon’s sport was witnessed. There was a good attendance of visitors, and the afternoon went with a swing, the Regimental Band adding to the enjoyment of the day a selected programme of music. Following were the results:— 100. yards handicap.—Tayler (Hastings) 1, Jonson (Hastings) 2, Sergeant Smith (Gisborne) 3. Javelin throwing.—Sergeant W. J. Burton (Hastings) 1, Sergeant LangSmith (Masterton) 2. 880 yards handicap.—Verry (Hastings) 1, Corporal Faulkner’ (Gisborne) 2, Engston (Masterton) 3. High jump.—Kana (Gisborne) 1, Tayler (Hastings) 2. Hop, step and jump.—Kana (Gisborne) 1, Norris (Gisborne) 2. Throwing the discus.—Sergeant Burton (Hastings) 1, Corporal Horne (Gisborne) 2, Sergeant Ellis (Napier) 3. 220 yards.—Tayler (Hastings) 1, Sergeant Smith (Gisborne) 2, Verry (Hastipgs) 3. Tug-o’-war. First round: Gisborne beat Napier, Hastings beat Masterton. Final: Hastings beat Gisborne. One mile Handicap.—Engstron (Masterton) 1, Bell (Masterton) 2, Quayle (Gisborne) 3. Wrestling.—Gooday (Hastings) beat Hedley (Gisborne); Sergeant Smith (Gisborne) beat Lowes (Hastings); Saunders (Hastings) beat Verry (Hastings); Boag (Hastings) beat Kana (Gisborne); Amner (Napier) beat Perriott (Gisborne); Cowan (Gisborne) beat Boyd (Napier); Horne (Gisborne) beat Haines (Masterton); Jonson (Hastings) beat Latimer (Hastings); Smith (Gisborne) beat Gooday (Hastings); Amner (Napier) drew with Hopkinson (Gisborne); Saunders (Hastings) beat Digby (Hastings); Smith (Gisborne) beat Giblin.
