HAVELOCK NORTH

NEWS FROM THE VILLAGE. The final distribution of free meat to the Havelock unemployed took place this afternoon. Over a period of 21 weeks covering the winter months, the local Unemploment Committee has distributed 182 carcases of mutton and six carcases of beef, which must have been of considerable assistance to the workless men and their families. The committee will meet at an early date to fihaljse all matters relating to the food depot, but in the meantime expresses its thanks and appreciation to all who have assisted in distributing meat and other rations and who have made available this very gratifying amount of food. Special mention must be made of the very fine service rendered by Messrs Whyte and Glenny. Ltd., who throughout the whole period have carried the meat each week from the freezing works to the depot in Havelock free of charge. The thanks of the committee are also due to the butchers, Messrs Stovold and Petch, who have cut up the meat every week. The committee thanks all those who made possible the free distribution of meat, by donations of sheep and cattle, or by cash. There was an attendance of about 160 people at the Town Board Hall last evening, when the Havelock Progressive Club held a very pleasant social and dance. Mr W. Hainsworth very capably acted as M.O. Excellent music for dancing was provided by Mrs Leedom, Miss E. Wilson ,Mr and Mrs G. McKay, Messrs R. Norwell, Walters (violin), and A. Miller (violin), Mrs Dunn and Mrs Manson. Items on the programme included musical monologues and recitations by Mr Theo. Starkey, recitation by Miss Cassin, pianoforte duet by Mrs Leedom and Miss Wilson, recitation by Miss M. Holmes, and numbers by Mrs Scott’s orchestra. Several games, novelty dances, and modern and old-time dances made up a most enjoyable programme, which kept everyone entertained and in high spirits until after midnight. The competition for tho doll was won by Mr J. Bailey, while the waltzing competition was won by Mr and Mrs E. Barrett.
