IMPROVEMENT FOR FIRST QUARTER

REVEALED BY TREASURY FIGURES.

An improvement in the State finances Jor the first quarter is revealed by Treasury figures. The expenditure exceeded the revenue by £1,099,678. The revenue totalled £11,929,316, an increase of £2,301,931 compared with the same period of last year. The expenditure amounted to £13,528,994, a decrease of £3,259,065. PAYABLE GOLD REGULATIONS. (Received 12, 10.30 a.m.) Canberra, Oct. 12. “No authenticated report that payable gold has been discovered at The Granites goldfield lias been received by the Department of Interior,’’ said the Minister, Mr Parkhill. “This is strange,” he pointed out, “as the Northern Territory mining law provides a penalty of the forfeiture of aW ground held by any persons failing to report the discovery of payable gold.”
