NEW MARKETS
TRADE WITH EAST
DEFINITE MOVE MADE
CONTROL BOARDS MEET MINISTERS.
HOPES FOR SATISFACTORY RESULTS. (From Our Special Parliamentary Reporter.) Parliament Buildings, Oct. 12. A definite move to establish trade between New Zealand and the Far East was made to-day when a conference was held between the Bt. Hon. G. W. Forbes, the Hons. J. G. Coates and B. Masters, and representatives of the four export control boards—meat, dairy produce, fruit and honey.
The Prime Minister said this afternoon that the conference had been most satisfactory and it was hoped that definite results would follow. He indicated that the control boards would meet in conference and further consider the matter. The chairman of the Meat Board, Mr. D. Jones, would be the convenor. Mr. Forbes said that, while he realised there were practical difficulties in the way, he and his colleagues were of the opinion that every possibility of opening up fresh channels of trade should be examined. As far as increased trade with the East was concerned direct shipping was one of the necessaries, although he made it clear that there was no intention of the State instituting such a service. “This is a start,” said the Prime Minister, who added: “The Government is very serious in its determination to see fresh markets developed wherever opportunity offers.” The Minister of industries and Commerce had obtained a vast amount of information regarding the possibilities of trade with Eastern countries and this had been furnished to the export control boards. Now that the preliminary conference had been held it was for the control boards to follow up the matter.
