WAIPUKURAU SALE

GOOD DEMAND FOR GROWN STEERS The largest yarding of store cattle lor many years was setn at Waipukurau sale yesterday. Included in the offering was a special entry of I,OOG cattle on account of Mr W. Henderson. This vendor also had numerous pens ol both fat bullocks and cows. The entry of ox beef met with a good demand, but many of the pens lacked finish There were no outstanding pens ol fat cows and heifers. The whole offering could be classed as from medium to ptain There was a noticeable drop in price in this class of beef In the store section, grown steers met with keen competition, ranging in price from £4 10/- to £4 14/-. Buyers from Manawatu operating in opposition to local glaziers were responsible for making this section of the sale a very firm one. Several good pens of empty P.A. and Hereford cows sold at prices ranging from £2 10/- to £2 15/-. The drop in cow beef caused forward cows also to ease in sympathy. All young steers met a dragging sale. A well! grown line of 3-yr P.A. steers realised £3 13/-, and a well grown line of 2-yr steers sold at £2 15/-. An attractive line of yearling P.A. steers made £2 8/6, although several pens of 2-yr steers were sold about the same price. It frequently happens that a wel'l-done line of yearlings show more size and weight than two-year steers which have been indifferently fanned during the past two seasons. Empty station heifers met with a good inquiry, a buyer from Pahiatua securing most of the pens offered. A buyer from Wairarapa, who was interested in the sale, mentioned that grown steers were realising more money at yesterday’s sale than was ruling in his district, but he thought younger cattle were slightly easier, it is questionable whether any other part of New Zealand has as much cattle feed as this part of Hawke’s Bay, therefore it would be reasonable to expect this market to be most buoyant In the fat sheep section, shorn fat ewes realised full market rates, but woolly ewes were distinctly easier, being sold at much the same price as sheep off the shears. With the near approach of the export season, prices for all fat sheep are likely to ease within the next two or three weeks, as the supply will be far beyond local trade requirements, and vendors will have to look to export buyers to take their surplus. BROKERS’ REPORTS The Hawke’s Bay Stockbrokers’ Association report having held the weekly sale at Waipukurau yesterday. There was only a medium yarding of fat sheep and prices were a shade easier than in the previous week. In the cattle pens there was a heavy entry of all classes, the accommodation being taxed to its utmost. Beef prices showed a decline, but store cattle realised prices practically on a par with last week’s rates. Included in the store cattle were numerous lines of good quality bullocks, which met with good competition. The following is a summary ot prices obtained:— Fat woolly ewes, medium quality 8/3 to 9/6; fat shorn ewes, medium quality, 8/9; fat shown ewes, 8/-;. wethe’ hoggets 10/4 to 11/-; ewe hoggets, small, 9/6; fat P.A. and Hereford cows, light finish, £3 1/- to £3 11/-; fat P.A. heifers, to £4 10/-; fat bullocks, £5 to £6 13/6; 3 and 4year P.A. bullocks, £4 11/- to £4 13/-; Hereford bullocks, to £4 14/-; 3-yr steers, £2 18/- to £3 5/-; 2-yr. steers, to £2 15/-; yearling steers, to £2 1/-; yearling heifers, £1 12/-; empty store cows, £2 to £2 13/6; P.A. heifers in calf, small, £2 2/- to £2 18/6.
