MARKETING OF WOOL.

(To the Editor.) Sir, —There recently appeared in the press a cabled report of the International Wool Conference, at which the president is reported as stating that he considered that certain proposals which had emanated from New Zealand to scour, the whole wool clip in the country of origin, would render the product impossible of treatment for its best uses by manufacturers, also that such proposals were not in the best interests of growers. These remarks no doubt refer to tne N.Z. Co-operative (Scouring and Carbonising Company, Limited, and I would like to correct a wrong impression that might be formed by such a statement. It is not the intention of the abovementioned company to scour all the wool it will handle, but by co-opera-tive effort to introduce an improved system of wool marketing by properly classifying, intensively sorting into uniform counts and qualities and selling under established standard classifications. All types of wool will be improved by such a scheme, and only the lower grades, heavy in grease and containing foreign vegetable matter will be treated otherwise. As the published statement mentions, it would not be advisable o r economical to scour all our wool, there are certain types used by textile manufacturers which would not bo benefited in any way by scouring here. However, it is apparent that there is an advantage in having some grades scoured, as shown by the recent London wool sales, where a scoured Now Zealand clip averaged 17Jd.
