HAVELOCK NORTH
NEWS FROM THE VILLAGE. There were about 60 couples present last evening at the old-time dance and euchre tournament in the Town Board Hall, organised by the Havelock North Labour Party social committee, assisted by the Hastings Trades Hall social committee. Mr Arthur J. Butcher capably carried out the duties of M.C. and made the dance go with a swing throughout. The floor was in splendid order and popular old-time music was provided by Mrs Hearne, while the extras were played by Mr Hearne and Mr E. Barrett. The euchre resulted in Mrs Robertson, Mrs McKendrick and Miss A. Bee tieing for the ladies’ two prizes; Mr Judd won the men’s prize and Mr A. Waterhouse, junr., was second. The Monte Carlo waltz was won by Mr G. Growcott and Mrs Satchwcll. A feature of the dance was the introduction of the Bon Ton, which, by its simplicity, attracted much interest and caused some amusement. Another of these popular dances will probably be held in a few weeks’ time. To-morrow (Saturday) afternoon at 2.15 the Cricket Club will hold its first practice of the season on the Domain. All members, intending members, and others interested in the game and in the welfare of the club are asked to attend. The Cricket Club acknowledges with thanks a donation of £2 2s from Mr G. Husheer. On Friday evening next, October It, the Unemployed Association will hold another old-time dance and card tournament in tho Town Board Hall. Nothing will be left undone to make the function a success and to assure everyone of a very pleasant evening. Excellent prizes will be offered for the curd tournament, for which Mr G. Husheer has donated £2.
