ORIGINAL VERSE

BUD OE PROMISE. (By Dultee Carman.) 1 wake with the sun in a Southern land Where the passion-flower grows, And I dream through the fireflyjewelled nigh? Of the cruel Northern snows. 1 fly on the wings of a soft warm breeze, To the frozen Arctic sea ; 1 breathe on the ice that has locked it fast, And set the currents free. 1 waken the buds from their winter sleep, In the bare, brown, dormant earth. I teach all fhe birds new songs to sing, And give the flowers birth. From the hill to the dale I hasten on And to all fresh life I bring, For I am the season of promise and hope— I am the Spring!
