NEWS FROM THE BEACH SUBURB The Haumoana Ladies’ Guild held their twelfth annual general meeting yesterday afternoon. There was an excellent attendance, including the Rev. and Mrs Gould. 'The report and balance-sheet for the past year was read and adopted, and the election of officers for the ensuing year resulted in the return of Mrs C. J. Baker as president, Mrs Sommerville as vicepresident, and Mrs Castte as secretary. The Rev. Gould gave an interesting address on church work in general and thanked the- Guild for its support and co-operation, which he much appreciated. Mrs Baker, president of the Guild, on behalf of the members suitably responded nnd expressed • the pleasure the Guild derived from helping with the church work and also assisting the District Nursing Association. Accounts amounting to 15/9 were passed for payment. A delectable afternoon tea was dispensed after which the. singing of the Doxology concluded a most delightful afternoon. Through the old-time dance held last Thursday being a success financially as well as socially, the committee of the house-to-house card parties (under whose direction this dance was organised) will have the pleasure of sending to the Wairoa Radio Fund the sum of 13/-.
The Clive Grange School Committee held their monthly meeting on Monday evening, when Mr McKeesick (chairman), Mesdames Oliver and Keong and Messrs Anderson and Estaugh (secre-
tary) and the headmaster (Mr Cockerill) were present. Several accounts were passed for payment. Notification to the effect that Miss McArdle had been appointed assistant teacher at the school was received. Several items of interest were discussed, including the matter of accommodation for the school, which has already been before the Education Board. It was decided to grant a holiday on the second day of the Show and also on Labour Day. Preparations are being made to hold a concert in November. The “Ocean View” guest house, kindly placed at the disposal of the people by Mr and’ Mrs Levi Bo.wen, was the scene of a very pleasant evening spent in playing cards. 'The winners of the tourney were: Ladies, Miss Manning 1, Mrs Vesty 2; gentlemen, Mr Eaton 1, Mr Manning 2. An enjoyable supper was handed round, after which the party broke up.
