CORRESPONDENCE

It must be distinctly understood that we are not to be identified with the opinions expressed by correspondents in our colum/a THE HASTINGS WOMEN’S LEAGUE (To the Editor.) Sir, —The Hastings Women’s League have voiced their opinion ou the Memorial! Hospital, “Hold Up” in no uncertain manner. These are the sort of protests which carry weight, and should be copied by all the women's leagues iu the district. We have at all times admired the useful work done by the numerous institutions that the women of Hawke’s Bay are connected with, but the Hastings Hospital question has been neglected to a certain extent. —Yours etc., UNITY IS STRENGTH. Hastings, 1/9/32. MOTOR ACCIDENTS. (To the Editor.) Sir.—ln view of the comments of Mr 1. L. Stout, S.M., in Palmerston North, regarding the obligation of motorists to report all accidents, it seems that Hastings motorists have in many instances “side-stepped” their liabilities in the above respect. For instance, Vast Saturday afternoon in Heretaunga street West, at the Lovedale road intersection, a motor-cyclist crashed into a bread van and was knocked out. He came from the direction of Stortford Lodge, and, as usual, along that stretch was doing 50 miles per hour. Both bread van and motor-cycle were damaged. This is one of many accidents that never come to light, although the general public know all about them. —Yours etc., SAFETY. Hastings, 1/9/32 HOSPITALS (To the Editor.) Sir, —“Is it better to save life or to kill?” was a question asked by our Lord many hundreds of years ago, and I believe that to this day almost everyone, including the members of the H.B. Hospital Board, would sooner see us walking about than know that we were planted under a slab of concrete. Envy, hatred, and malice, born of the devil, has certainly no justification in New Zealand where there is room for us all to enjoy health, wealth, and happiness, and 1 would therefore appeal! to all the litigants m this unfortunate hospital dispute to settle their doubts by referring to the Old Book where a truthful answer is given to every question, and I feel certain that in St. Matthew’s motto will be found the solution of our troubles, not only hospital but most others as well. It is hard to reeoncite, sometimes, the attitude that is taken , up by the heads of our institutions, with the teachings of Christianity. In 1 justice to them we are forced to believe that their outlook concerns only the financial which is m reality a nonexistent difficulty, and a delusion which is at all times liable to create bitter party feelings which must cease. As a ' proof of my assertion will the chairman and members of the Hospital Board and the Mayor of Hastings enquire from the Government what they intend to do with the money made available • by the co-operative union for hospital . expenditure sufficient to instal and equip all hospitals in New Zealand 1 necessary for the public good, as well as to make it unnecessary to levy any hospital rate in New Zealand Y’ours etc., NAT. BEAMISH. Hastings, 30/8/32.
