MEAT PRODUCERS’ BOARD

ELECTORAL COMMITTEE MEETS TWO NEW REPRESENTATIVES Wellington, Aug. 31. Delegates constituting the electoral committee met at Wellington to-day to consider the annual report and statement of accounts of the Meat Producers’ Board, to elect two producers’ representatives on the board and to discuss matters of general interest to meat growers. There were three candidates for the two vacancies for representatives— Messrs T. A. Duncan (Hunterville), James Begg (Dunedin) and James Carr (Methven). After the candidates had addressed the delegates a ballot was taken and resulted in the election of Messrs Begg and Duncan. A resolution was carried that it be a recommendation to the board that more money be spent in research work in New Zealand. It was decided that in futile dele-

gates should meet the day before that fixed for the annual meeting. The importance of careful handling of livestock while in transit to freezing worxs was stressed by Mr Duncan. Many lambs graded second class, be said, were put into this grade on account of bruising, which meant serious lose to farmers. Mr J. H. Joll (Havelock North) congratulated the board on the satisfactory state of its balance sheet. He could not see that much could be done t<> reduce administrative costs, and in anv case any reduction it might be possible to make in the running of the board would not make one iota of difference to the farmer. He believed there wav room for the expansion of markets fy the East. The farmers, of New Z< :> a| land had stood up to the requests < their leading me n for more and mo in production. He was not going to sn that that had benefited the farmer. A last year’s meeting there had be-.. talk of increased production, but thev were producing more at a greater cos: and receiving less in return.
