LAST THURSDAY’S GAMES UNITED WHITE AND DIAMOND R. PLAY A DRAWN CAME. KARORI UPSET WAIMARAMA. * (B y “Cleft Ash.”) United White were unlucky in making a draw with Diamond R. The Whites had much the better of the game, their forwards continually raiding the Blacks* circle, but something would go wrong at the critical moment. File and Wilcock put up a stout defence for Diamond R. The tactics of the former when hard pressed in the circle were questionable at times, and 1 considered that at least two penalty bullies should have been given against him for deliberate obstruction. Simpson played a useful game for the Blacks. He gave the White forwards a lot of trouble. Stitt and McDonald were responsible for the Diamond R. scores. Stitt scored a good goal, but McDonald caught Love at a weak moment and the effort should not have resulted in a score. Vaughan was patchy on the wing; he allowed too much to pass him and thereby held up the attack. Orr, though not brilliant, is a solid grafter and well worth his place in the team. Simonsen replaced Geddis in the Whites’ team and he showed that he has forgotten nothing about the game. It is to be hoped that he will continue playing; he is much too good a player to be allowed to drop out. Fitzmaurice played a groat game for the Whites, he scored a goal with a beautiful shot, and with any luck he would have landed two more. McNab was responsible for the Whites’ other goal. He, gave a good account of himself, sending across some fine centres. Rowlands was a fine connecting link in the forwards, but spoils a lot of his work by giving “sticks.” Hoy is gradually losing that bad habit of obstruction. Ho takes a lot of hard knocks and always comes up smiling. Karori V, Waimarama.
Karori played one of their best games to date and deserved their win against a strong Waimarama side. Miles scored twice in quick succession early in the first spell. Both goals were the outcome of good play by Prior and Kellett, who were combining nicely. Waimarama made many desperate attempts to pierce the defence and reached the circle only to be driven out time and again. Hawkins in goal for Karorj, gave a fine display and saved many hot shots. One particularly good save was when he jumped for a high one and stopped the ball as it was passing under the bar. J. Dotee turned out to assist his old club and gave a finished exhibition of full back play. He was a thorn in the flesh of Waimarama. I understand that Jack is settled here now and will bo turning out regularly for Karori, Rouse and Lawson were the pick of the Karori halves and broke up a lot of the magpies’ attacks, besides feeding well to their forwards. Schroder showed a lot of his old dash and combined well with Lewis on the wing. Both wingers for Karori were caught offside too many times in the first spell. Waimarama always play their backs well up the field and forwards opposing them should learn to adapt themselves to the changed circumstances. A. Gillies was the outstanding player for Waimarama. Several times he took the ball right through on Ids own and made Some splendid openings for his forwards. The August brothers all played up to their Usual standard, but found the defence too sound. A Bit of Advice. The game between United Gold and United Blue does not call for much comment on my part. Gold won by four goals to one. and they can congratulate themselves that Mahoney was missing from the Blue ranks. Had he been present the match would have been taken more seriously and a better game would have resulted. •‘Cleft Ash” is of the opinion that the referee* showed Weakness in allowing the game to be played in a holiday spirit, and considers that they would have been doing their duty if they had called the two captains together early in the piece and gieven them a line as to their course of action regarding the conduct of their respective teams. Position of Teams. The position of the teams after the above games are as follows: — United White 17 Diamond R 17 Waimarama 16 Karori 14 United Gold 10 United Blue ; 4
