RAN AMOK
SUSPECTED MADMAN IN HIGH-POWERED RACING CAR. 'CHASE LED BY FAMOUS FLIER. (United Press Association—By CableCopyright.) (Received 13, 10.20 a.m.) Brisbane, Aug. 13. Running amok in a high-powered racing car, which is reported to have been stolen from a city showroom and which also contained his six-year-old daughter, .. man drove at breakneck speed among the aeroplanes at the Archertield aerodrome. He crashed into two 'planes and broke through three fences before leaving the aerodrome with three cars in pursuit. Sir Charles Kingsford Smith’s Southern Cross was one of the machines menaced. Sir Charles stood guard with a loaded rifle, forcing the driver of the car to sheer away from the Southern Gross. The famous aviator led the subsequent chase after the wrecker, the cars travelling at 60 miles an hour. Shot after shot was fired at the tyres of the racer until the fugitive stopped. The man submitted quietly. Later William Elder was charged. He is under suspicion of being insane.
