KARAMU ROAD BUILDING
FOR MR F. J. TONKIN. Work was begun yesterday on the erection of a block of four shops on the empty section between the Umon Bank and the Hawke’s Bay Farmers’ Meat Co., and it is expected that the building will be completed within ten or twelve weeks- The contract has been let by Mr F. J. Tonkin, the owner, to Totterdells Ltd., and the plane were made by Messrs Davies, Garnett, and Phillips. The buiMing will consist of a single storey, and in view of the probability that the owner of the adjoining property on the Hereto unga street aide will shortly put a new building on his section, one of the walls will be built as a party-wall. The frontage to Karaniu road is *8 teet, and the depth 71 feet, and the building will be erected according to the earthquake-resisting principles set out in Government regulations. The shops nnd their frontages Will be of strikingly handsome apnenranos, add will do much to remove the somewhat desolate aspect that the area has had since the enrthqmke.
