NAPIER’S CARNIVAL
TENTATIVE PROGRAMME. COMMITTEES APPOINTED. The management of the affairs in con nection with the running of the carnival at the end of January was advanc ed a further stage last night, when Mr M. S. Spenee presided over a meeting attended by the majority of the com rnittee and a large number of repre sentatives of sports bodies and other organisations which have volunteered their assistance. A tentative programme for the car nival week was drawn up, but its observance as it now stands will depend to a certain extent upon whether the Navy will be at the port. It has now been found impossible to hold the race meeting on the first Saturday, as it would elash with the Wellington fixture and it has therefore been decided to hold it on the second Saturday. It is now proposed to hold the band contest on the first Saturday. The following committees were set up to deal with various phases of the function: — Band Contest. —Messrs J. W. Callag han (convenor), H. Heiford, F. Lloyd. Adjutant Goffin with more to add. Finance and advertising.—Messrs M. S. Spence (convenor), W. Harvey, K. C. Wright, M. F. Constable, A. B. Hurst. H. Anderson and C. Louisson. Accommodation. —Messrs G. B. Menzies (convenor), B. M. Chadwick. C. Louisson. Sports.—Messrs J. Harris (convenor). H. Le Bas, C. Payne, N. R. Hamilton, F. Spalding, E. H. N. Stewart, H. Heiford, M. B. Grant, W. Drummond, and the Rev F. de Lisle. Entertainment. —Messrs A. E. Renouf (convenor), C. Tidy, P. W. Tombs, H Heiford, F. Lloyd, S. P. Spiller.' Procession. —Messrs L. Pickering (convenor), L. Bestall, H. Anderson, R N. McNiven, H. Tate, P. W. Peters, A A. Hastings, J. Fairclough, W. J. Gilberd and Dr. W. D. Fitz Gerald. All committees are to meet and discuss the tentative programme and a further meeting of all convenors will be held in four weeks’ time, after which a full general committee meeting will be held. The tentative programme Includes a race meeting, band contest, fireworks display, boxing, first aid competition, boys’ boxing, Fire Brigade entertainment, athletic sports, procession, etc. REPLY FROM GOVERNORGENERAL. In response to the invitation that has been extended to the Governor-General and Lady Bledisloe to be present at the time of the carnival that is to be held to mark the opening of the new Napier His Excellency’s official secretary has replied to Mr M. S. Spence, chairman of the Carnival Committee, that it is not at present possible to state definitely whether it. will be practicable for them to be present. The invitation appeals strongly to them, and a reply will be given in a month’s time.
