HAVELOCK NORTH
WOMEN’S INSTITUTE MEETING. The August meeting was held on Wednesday last, Mrs Chapman-Taylor presiding over a fair attendance. The proceedings opened with the Institute song, after which came the usual routine business and the election of four new members. The president then gave an exceedingly vivid and interesting account of the recent Dominion Conference in Wellington, which she attended as delegate. The various sessions of the conference were fully described, including the impressive opening scene and mention was made of the most important matters dealt with. Then, turning to the social side, the speaker told of Lady Bledisloe’s visit at afternoon tea, and of the share taken by all the delegates in the community singing at the Town Hall. The visit to the carillon was a great pleasure, as also was the talk on “Drama” given by Miss Elizabeth Blake and the short play “Neighbourly Love” produced by her. In conclusion, Mrs Chapman-Taylor paid a special tribute to the invaluable work done by Miss Maddever and Mrs Gibson Young, who were in charge of the commissariat and of the general comfort of the delegates. “They seemed to be here, there and everywhere,” she said, “and I want to give a special bit of praise to those two wonderful people.” A hearty vote of thanks to Mrs Chapman-Taylor was passed with acclamation.
After tea, served by Mesdames J. B Campbell, T. Cook’, Stratton and Marven ,and Misses Fish, Ritchie and Strang, community singing was en. joyed, led by the newly-formed music circle, with Miss Alice Fox at the piano. Some new ground was broken, for the songs chosen included, among others, “Pretty Polly Oliver,’’ “Rio Grande,” and a round with a delightful lilting rhythm. The National Anthem closed a very happy meeting. FRIENDLY EUCHRE MATCH.
A friendly euchre match was played in the Havelock Fire Station last evening between the Hastings and Havelock North Brigades. After a very pleasant evening the Hastings team were the winners by a narrow margin of points At the conclusion, Foreman G. Hook, on behalf of Havelock, congratulated the Hastings team, and extended his brigade’s best wishes to Hastings.
Superintendent R. Henderson, in replying on behalf of Hastings, thanked the Havelock men for their hospitality. JOLLY LITTLE EVENING. A very lively little social was held in the Village Hall last evening, where the children of St. Luke’s Sunday School had assembled for an evening’s fun and frolic. The games were supervised by Archdeacon Maclean and some of the parents, and between each game the youngsters indulged in a romp about the floor, causing much amusement to the onlooking parents. A very delightful supper was dispensed by several mothers. The evening concluded before 10 p.m. with the singing of the National Anthem.
