HAUMOANA

WOMEN’S INSTITUTE. The August meeting of the Haumoana Women’s institute took place on Thursday, Mrs Neilson, president, presiding over a large attendance. Two new members. Mrs Wise and Miss Hibell, were elected. After the business was dealt with, Mrs Manson, of Twyford, read a most interesting report of the Dominion Federation meeting held recently in Wellington. Mrs Burge and-Mrs Mitchell, also of Twyford Women’s Institute, then gave a demonstration of smocking and soon had everyone trying to master the various stitches. Several beautifully worked articles were shown. Mrs Gatenby on behalf of the Red Cross workers reported that 35 garments had been distributed while others were yet in course of construction. The singing circle, led by Mrs Gatenby, gave several items, and duets rendered by Mrs Neifeon and Mrs Gatenby were all thoroughly enjoyed. The mocassin competition, which created a good deal of interest, resulted in Mrs McCarthy coming first and Miss Muriel Barlow second. One pair made from goat skin were greatly admired. The hostesses, MesdamOs Agnew, Anderson, Bowen, Misses Agnew, Allington and Bowen then handed round a dainty afternoon tea and a happy social time was spent. A hearty vote of thanks was then accorded Mrs Manson, Mrs Burge and Mrs Mitchell. The singing of the National Anthem brought a vety pleasant afternoon to a close.
