HURDLES TO MEMBO. MINERAL BEATS RETRACT. Ohristchurch, Aug. 11. The Canterbury Jockey Club meeting was continued to-day. The weather was dull but fine after overnight showers The attendance was good and the course soft. The totalizator invest ments amounted to £19,658, compared with £24,941 last year. GRAND NATIONAL HURDLE RACE. 5 Membo (Salt) 1 7 Captain’s Gift (Cooper) .. .. 2 1 Paddon (Burgess)3 Also ran: 9 High Pitch, 4 Nukumai, 2 Full Mark, 12 Luminary, 3 Pahu, 10 Antrim Boy, 11 Moieua, 6 Nassock, 8 Jayson. Full Mark fell at the second fence and passing the stands the order was Morena, Antrim Boy, Captain’s Gift, I’ahu, Paddon, Nassock and High Pitch. Antrim Boy and Morena alternated in the lead going down the back and at the far turn were followed by Pahu, Captain’s Gift, Membo, Nukumai and Paddon. Captain’s Gift led into the straight from Morena, Pahu, Antrim Boy, Membo, Paddon and Nukumai. Nukumai and Paddon came down at the last fence, leaving Captain’s Gift clear of the field, but in the run home Membo beat Captain’s Gift by two lengths, with Paddon three lengths away. Antrim Boy was fourth. Time. 4.57 2-5 AUGUST HANDICAP 2 Merry Peel (L. J, Ellis) .. •• J 5 Binging Cheer (A. Taku Tama was first on to the course proper with Waiwene, Beacon Fire, Fair Weather Merry Peel and Ringing Cheer also showing up. Merry Pee) and Binging Cheer fought out the finish, the former winning by a neck, with Rational 11. three lengths away. Beacon Fire was fourth. Time, 1.14 2-5. Knockalong led into the straight from Night Flyer, Consono, Gay Cimrt and Weatherly. Water Polo came from well back in the run homo and beat Knockalong by a neck, with Weatherly a length away. Also ran: 5 Compris, 2 Fast Passage, 12 Ramo, 7 Mount Boa, 3 Colonel Cygnus, 10 Ravine, 11 Giggleswfck, 6 Saltpot, 9 Craigavon, 13 Coll. Saltpot had charge rounding the far turn, with Mount Boa, Giggleswick, Craigavon, Semper Paratus, Ravine, Minerval and Fast Passage. Saltpot retired beaten at the home turn. Giggleswick led to the course proper from Minerval, Bavine, Compris, Ramo and Retract. Minerval finished well and beat Retract by a head, Semper Paratus being two lengths away. Compris was fourth. Time, 2.9 4-5.
