Mis a M. Peach, of Hastings, left by the mail train this morning on a holiday visit to Auckland. Mrs Lane, of Gisborne, is visiting Hastings, and is staying with her aunt, Mrs H. E. Beamish. Mr Samuel Bowman, of Dunedin, has been appointed the commercial representative on the New Zealand Dairy Produce Board.—Press Association. Mr H. E. Robinson, Hawera, has been appointed secretary of the Hawera Trotting Club to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of Mr E. P. Cox. Mr R. p. Kelly, chairman of the Taradale Town Board, informed the meeting of the board last'evening that he has definitely decided not to seek re-election next month. Mr J. S. Barton, Chief Napier Commissioner. left for Wellington by mail train this morning on business of the borough. He is expected to return to Napier about the middle of next week. An Auckland telegram reports the death of Mr James P. McPhail, aged 57. Mr McPhail was Mayor of Birkenhead from 1915 to 1921 and was elected again in 1929, holding the position till his death The following guests are staying at “Belvedere,” Hastings:—Mr J, Longworth (Dunedin), Mr and Mrs J. Williams (Wellington), Mr R. Gifford (Kereru), Mr J. Carson (Dunedin), Mr R. L. Halliburton (Wellington). Mr B. Clark (Wellington). Mr H. P. Williams has been appointed to the general managership of the Australian Broadcasting Commission at a salary of £2OOO a year. Mr Williams has had a long association with broadcasting, both as announcer at 2FC and in an executive capacity He is also a journalist with an extensive knowledge of rural problems —Press Association. The death is reported from Khartoum of Mr J. Stewart Moncrieff Paul, the 24-year-old assistant district commissioner at Wan Dedani, 100 miles up tho Nile from Khartoum. Mr. Paul, who was a son of BrigadierGeneral Ernest Paul, a former director of works in the Mediterranean, Egypt, and Palestine expeditionary forces, was accidentally electrocuted while trying to rescue a prisoner working in a club garden from contact with an overhead electric cable.
