BRIDE-TO-BE ENTERTAINED

BRIDGE PARTY FOR MISS SCANNELL. On Thursday afternoon. Miss Ruth Scannell, who is to be married before long, was given a very bright and entertaining party by Mrs McAlley, at the Hawke’s Bay Fanners’ tea-room. Miss Hodge was present and the hostess and guests were almost all Old Girls of Woodford House. Tables were arranged for bridge, the following being, the players: Mrs McAlley, Miss Scannell, Miss Hodge, Mesdames Ernest Groome, M. Chambers, Kemble, E. Couper, D. Allen, Seton Wenley, J. Masterson, and de Lisle, Mi sses M. Ritchie, Margot Russell and Ruth Nelson. Apologies were sent by Mrs Scannell, Mrs Tosswill, Mrs Percy Wall, Mrs T. Price, and Miss Joan Barker. During the afternoon Miss Hodge, on behalf of those who were present and who sent apologies, made a little presentation to Miss Scannell of two packs of playing cards, and a bridge scorer ornamented in gold and black. The latter had been inscribed by Miss Hodge “From some of Ruth’s oldest and youngest schoolfellows” and was signed by all who gave it. Another gift was a novel crimson velvet bridge cloth, finished with gold braid, which had been made as a present by Lady Russell. A charming posy of cyclamen, carnations, sprigs of japonica and maidenhair with pretty ribbons was also given to Miss Scannell.

Miss Hodge, in a brief speech, wished Miss Scannell all happiness for the future. Miss Scannell responded, thanking everyone for their kind wishes and the pretty gifts. A delicious tea was dispensed from a table which had been prettily arranged with bowls of pink japdnica, freesias and violets, all sent from Wanganui. The prize for highest score was won by Miss Scannell, who was given a little crystal vase.

Mrs McAlley wore a becoming frock of black georgette, effectively inset with relief of jade green, with a black bridge coat. Miss Scannell was in a smart woollen suit of tomato-red, with a brown hat and brown fur coat.
