KEEN GOLF

IVO WHITTON BEATS DALRYMPLE FOR ROYAL MELBOURNE HONOURS. In a closely fought match of firstclass golf, Ivo Whitton deefated SydDalrymple 2 and 1 in the semi-final of the Royal Melbourne championship. The far back championship tees were used, and a strdng wind made the test more difficult, and presented problems at almost every hole. Whitton was three over fours when the match ended, and Dalrymple had taken a stroke more. Twice in the round Dalrymple missed very short putts for wins. Each took 38 strokes for the first half, but Whitton was in front by a hole. Both played the tenth weakly for fives, and got fours at the 429-yard eleventh, where Dalrymple’s No. 3 iron home was a masterly shot. The last named, however, played the twelfth badly, topping both his drive and third. At the next, he missed the short putt, but made amends by winning the next with a brilliant birdie. His mashie shot to the green landed nine feet past the pin, and hopped back two feet.

Dalrymple followed his fine effort by taking the fifteenth, where he hit a wonderful No. 1 iron to the green for a birdie 4. Whitton was on the sixteenth green with a No. 2 iron, after Dalrymple had badly pulled his brassie to the rough. Using a putter, the latter ran in through a bunker, but again missed the putt. Both played the seventeenth (434 yards) in flawless fours, each narrowly missing a putt for 3. That ended the match. Whitton got a four at the last, and Dalrymple a five. The figures were: —Whitton, 4,5, 5, 4,3, 4,4, 4, 5—38; 5,4, 4,3, 5,5, 3,4, 4—37—75. Dalrymple, 5,6, 3,5, 3,4, 3,4, 5—38; 5,4, 6,4, 3,4, 4,4, 5—39 —77.

Whitton was playing his shots in a most convincing manner, and seems to be working up to great form for the big task of defending the open championship of Australia in Adelaide next month.
