A THRILLING HALF-HOUR

FIRE AND EXPLOSIONS. ELECTRIC SUB-STATION EQUIPMENT DAMAGED. By Telegraph—Press Association Christchurch, June 22. Accompanied by a series of loud explosions, fire did considerable damage to the equipment housed in the electric substation in Purlri street, Rlccartcn, at 9 o’clock this morning and provided residents with a thrilling half-hour. The greatest thrill came when a detonation blew a portion of the roor skywards in fragments. Other explosions followed, but eventually the bri gade quelled the outbreak. The fire is believed to be due to the result of a faulty condenser heating up the transformers, which then burst. The damage is estimated at several hundreds of pounds.
