GERMAN COURT CASE. DEATH-BREW A FAILURE. Berlin, June 1. Belief in magic and witchcraft is still rampant in villages of Northern Germany. A so-called “witch,” Frau Schmidt, whose life had been made a burden, brought a slander action in Kappeln Court against a neighbour, who had alleged that Frau Schmidt had bewitched her daughter and her hens. The defendant gave evidence that she and her daughter became ill, and that the hens were laying badly. A fortune-teller advised them to fumigate the house by burning brimstone to destroy Frau Schmidt’s spell. They recovered. and the Bens’ output returned to normal. It was alleged that defendant had tried to kill Frau Schmidt according to a magic formula prescribed by tho for-tune-teller, by boiling milk and herbs in an earthen pot until the pot cracked.
