SENIOR FIXTURE H. 5.0.8. v. TE AUTE OLD BOYS WIN. BIG MARGIN OF POINTS. From Our Own Correspondent. At Waipukurau on Saturday Te Aute (rod) met Waipukurau High School Old Boys (white) in the senior competition. The day was excellent and the ground in good order. The teams lined out as follows: Te Ante: Newton, Goldsmith, Ruru, F. Grace, Merritt, Pile, M. Pene, Tibble, Rangi, Paerata, Kerrigan’ Crawford, Utiku, Waititi, Parker. Old Boys: Piki, Wright, Wilson, Dyer, McCarthy, Fergusson, Smales, Brain, Scherf, Ross, Arlidge, C. Wilson, Lee, Drowcr, Smith.
Smales kicked off for Old Boys, the home team facing the sun. The whites had Te Aute early on the defensive. Smales secured from a line-out and passed to McCarthy, who cut in but the movement broke down. A free kick relieved the Reds, Newton lining well down. The Whites secured from the linc-out and all the backs handled but Wilson missed his pass. Later Wright gained much ground with a good line kick and Smales secured from the ensuing line-out and cut. through to score wide out. Ross missed the shot. Old Boys 3 Te Aute u
A clever interception by Merritt spelt trouble, the ball going down to Piki, who only had time to save. Old Boys drove up-field but Waititi saved with a splendid line kick. Te Aute gained possession from the line-out but. Goldsmith dropped his pass. Old Boys came away, McCarthy being prominent, but Scherf spoiled a certain try by passing foward. However, Smales again came to light by scoring wide out after securing from the scrum. Dyer missed. Old Boys 6 Te Aute 0
Scherf was caught off-side soon after resumption but Paerata’s shot fell short. 4- cross kick by Goldsmith in mid-field saw McCarthy beat a Te Auto man and he carried the ball through but the ball went too far aud Newton forced.
Play returned to half-way and from a scrum Smales secured and kicked, but Goldsmith secured aud lined well down. A good passing rush by the White backs gained much ground. Play up to this stage was all in favour of the home team, the Te Aute backs not handling the ball with anything like their usual certainty.
From loose play near the Red twenty-five Smales snapped up and passed to Fergusson, but the movement broke down through a forward pass. Two free kicks to Te Aute helped them to gain much ground but any advantage they might have gained was spoiled by poor handling. Newton put Old Boys on the defensive with a good lino kick but the Whites drove them back to their own territory. From a line-out 40 yards out McCarthy secured and cut through, running right up almost to the line before he let the ball out to Scherf, who passed, but the ball was dropped. Brain, who was on hand, secured and dived over. Dyer added the extra points. Old Boys 11 Te Aute 0
Paerata figured in a good rush for Te Aute and Tibble carried on till upended with a good tackle. Waititi had a penalty shot but missed. Half-time sounded soon after, the score standing at —
Old Boys 11 Te Ante 0 SECOND HALF. After the spell Old Boys followed up a kick by Wilson and carried play into Red Territory, but a good kick by Pile saved. Play was carried right up to the White line but Scherf broke away with the ball at his toe, saving for Old Boys. A good kick by Lee saw the leather go down to Newton, who was smothered but managed to find touch. McCarthy secured and passed to Wilson, who sent on to Fergusson, who transferred to Dyer, who scored wide out. The shot by Smales ’fell short. kept them out, until when right in front Merritt secured and potted a good goal. Old Boys 14 Te Aute 4
A good line kick by Leo gained ground for Old Buys. Play was carried on to the Red line and from a scrum Smales secured and passed to Wilson, who raced over and ran round to ground near the uprights. Dyer collected the extra points. Old Boys 19 Te Aute 4 Dyer put his side on attack witbi a good kick down to Newton, who lo>t the ball but regained and kicked. McCarthy secured and passed to Wilson, who found touch well down, Ruru clearing nicely for Te Aute. Boss was prominent heading a rush for the Whites, while Fergusson carried on and passed to McCarthy, who passed forward when right on the line. A penalty; taken by Newton found touch at the twenty-five. Old Boys hammeted away, McCarthy and Dyer being prom.* ineut but Ross was caught off-side, a free kick relieving. Smales secured from a scrum and let the ball out tai Drower but the movement broke down when Dyer was within an ace of scoring through his pass being foward. TtJ Aute broke away, Tibble being promin* ent. Newton had an unsiict e«sful though good attempt at 40 yards out; for a pot. Scherf was prominent at the head of a rush.. A good rush by Old Boys looked promising but Wright was smothered. Fergusson secured and made a bold bid but lost the ball. The Red forwards gradually drove down the field to the half-way, Pile carrying on with the ball but Dyer secured and found touch just inside White territory. Bustling tactics by the Whites worked Te Aute down to their twenty-five and from a scrum the Whites hooked and the ball came out to the backs, but Merritt saved well and booted up the field. Ruru finally secured and raced away but his pass went astray. The final whistle sounded shortly! afterwards with play in midfield. Old Boys 19 Te Aute 4 Mr. T. Geenty refereed. JUNIOR GRADE. TIKOKINO (3) v. H. 5.0.8. (0). At Coronation Park, Waipawa, Tikokino narrowly defeated H. 5.0.8., after an exceptionally fast and open game, by an unconverted try. Both teams gave an excellent exhibition of th* game, and right till the sound of time the issue was in doubt. Kirk, the H. 5.0.8. five-eighth received a kick in the head which necessitated medical attention whilst Tennent was twice injured and retired from the field. K. Dickson, Tikokino, injured his shoulder and was unable to continue, Mr Puru Logan> refereed.
WAIPUKURAU (9) v. TAKAPAU (3)! Waipukurau defeated Takapau at Central Park, Waipukurau, by nine points to three. The. game was closa and interesting and neither side opened its scoring account till well on in the second half. THIRD GRADE. WAIPAWA ILS. (8) v. WATPI KURAU (7). Waipukurau went down to Waipawa High School at Waipawa by one point, after a very even tussle. M. son, Waipukurau, was responsible for a splendid field goal, which brought his side to within an ace of winning. WAIPUKURAU H.S. (8) v. TE AUTE (6). At Central Park, Waipukurau H.S. secured n two point win over To Aute College after a struggle full of interest.
