RIVERS BOARD CHAIRMAN
MR W. C. JARVIS ELECTED. MR LASSEN AS VICE-CHAIRMAN. Mr. W. G. Jarvis was to-day elected chairman of the Hawke’s Bay Rivers Board. After nominations for the position of chairman for the ensuing year were invited, Mr H. H. Burns nominated Mr R. E. Talbot, and in doing so said that during the term Mr Talbot had been chairman he had attended to his duties iu a most satisfactory manner, and the speaker considered that the board could not elect a better man. Mr L. E. Harris seconded the nomination.
Mr J. H. Sheath then nominated Mr Jarvis for the position, stating that he had given good service to the board for many years.
The nomination was seconded by Mi H. R. Clark.
Mr Jarvis’s nomination was supported by Messrs H. R. Clark, J. H. Sheath, J. Macdonald and C. Las Sen, and he was duly elected. Mr Jarvis, in returning thanks, said he recognised that he was following a good man, but he would endeavour to carry out his duties to the best of his ability. Although the vote was not unanimous, lie was satisfied that members would get behind him in carrying out work that would be of lasting benefit to the district. Mr Talbot, in congratulating Mi Jarvis, said that he would have his support as long as their opinions coincided. He wished to remind the board that it was facing one of the most serious times in the history of the country. The board had to consider its ratepayers, and in doing so would have to go easy. He wished Mr Jarvis every success, and trusted that the occasion would not arise when there would be a need lor any disagreement. Mr Talbot, in declining nomination lor tho vice-chairmanship, said that on the last occasion he was elected to that position the disastrous earthquake followed a lew moments later.
On the motion of Mr H. R -Clark, seconded by Mr J 11. Sheath, Mr Lassen was elected as vice-chairman. Mr Lassen, who was recently elected to represent the Hasliius Ward, wawarnili wel. oined by the chairman
