NEWS AND NOTES.

Mr. K. W. Carpenter has just returned to Waipukurau from a holiday spent in the Auckland province. From an early hour yesterday shots were heard from the direction of Lake Hatuma, a number of sportsmen having duly celebrated the opening of the game shooting season. It is understood that conditions were unfavourable for large “bags.” Dr. C. Raymond delivered a further IccVere to the local branch of the St. John’s Ambulance Association last night, when the usual ,<riiodic meeting of members took place. It is reported that a small section of land, adjacent to the main street and railway station, regarded as worthy of further beautification is to be utilised by the Railway Department for commercial purposes, having been leased as the site for a petrol bowser station. Under the auspices of the Women’s Division of the N.Z. Farmers’ Union a meeting is beiu .held in Waipukurau this afternoon. The speaker for the occasion is Mrs. C. C. Jackson, of Masterton, Dominion president of the division.

During April 286 points of rain fell in Waipukurau, rain falling on 11 days, the wettest day being April 28th when 115 points were recorded.

The funeral of Mr. George Smales, of Waipukurau, took place yesterday, the great respect in which the deceased was held being demonstrated by the large number in the cortege to the graiiside. The Rev, Brown, of Arainoho, conducted the service both at the house and the graveside. The pallbearers were Messrs. Percy Hunter, J. A. Buchanan, A. C. Russell, D. Connell, A. L. Wallis and W. Adams. The South African Veterans’ Association was well represented. Many beautiful floral emblems were received from many parts of the province. LADIES’ GOLF.
