NAPIER’S MUSIC FESTIVAL
COMPETITORS ENTERTAINED. JOLLY AFTERNOON TEA. It has always been the custom ol the Napier Competitions Society t<> entertain all competitors at the close of tho sessions to afternoon tea, and this year’s function took place yesterday afternoon at the Trocadero Tearooms, in the Foresters’ Hall, Napier, when local and visiting competitors to the number of sixty attended and a jolly time was spent. Two tables were arranged from the cross table, and were decorated with vases of yellow calliopsis, marigolds, and maidenhair fern.
A very dainty tea was served, after which the president of the society, Mr R. C. Wright, extended a hearty welcome to all on behalf of the society, and said that all the judges were highly pleased with the quality of the work presented. Mr Wright hoped the society would have a more convenient hall by next year, but they were thankful to have had a place to carry on the 1932 competitions. He thanked all competitors for their loyal support, and wished them a good reception at the. demonstration concert in Napier last night and to-night in Hastings. The secretary of the society (Mr. 8 P Spiller) also spoke and thanked all competitors for their attendance, especially those who never dropped out, and who had not won a prize. The visiting competitors made the competitions, and he was pleased to see so many new ones It had been one of the most enjoyable festivals, and the adjudicators were clelighted. As regarded the dancing, Miss Daphne Knight had said that, the Highland dancing was the best she had seen, and that the fancy dancing presented was one of the best sections ever seen in New Zealand.
Mrs Barry (Gisborne), on behalf ol the Gisborne competitors, made a speech in which she thanked Mr Spiller for his many kindnesses and help. •All competitors were going home very well satisfied and taking a good many prizes with them She then led the company in the singing of “For He’s a Jolly Good Fellow,” which was followed by hearty cheers. Little Melba Niven, of Palmerston North, on behalf of their competitors ■presented a gift, also a bouquet of sweets, beautifully made, which Mr Spiller accepted in the absence of Mrs Spiller. Mrs McKersey, of Normanby, thanked Mr Spiller heartily for the great attention and kindness shown to all, and intimated that next year they would return bringing a regiment of competitors with them.
