Dealing with the discrepancy between farming costs and prices, Mr W. Machin, in an adress at Christchurch cited the case of the wheatgrower. In 1914, he said, threshing charges in Canterbury were 3|d a jushd. Last year they were 6d. an increase of 79 per cent. Labour costs in 1914 wera Is 9d an hour, last year they wer-i 2s 3Jd, an increase of 32 per rent. In the sains perioa wheat hrd gone down fiom or cjd a bushel to 4s 4d, a decrease oi 24 per cent. “That is the sort of thing the farmer is up against.” ccmmented the speaker.
