EDUCATION ECONOMIES
WELLINGTON BOARD’S DECISIONS LETTERS SENT TO GOVERNMENT By Telegraph—Press Association. Wellington, April 1. Following special meetings held for the purpose of discussing in detail the findings and recommendations of the National Expenditure Commission insofar as they affect primary education, tthe Wellington Education Board has forwarded to the Government, through, the chairman, a letter conveying the board’s decisions.
The board, it states, is prepared to approve of the economies set out in the letter, totalling £250,000, but it is stated that the services referred to are essential to modern education and should be restored as soon as the Dominion is in a position to afford them. In another letter the board strongly condemns the proposal to abolish the nine education boards and the phroposal to control primary education by a central advisory board. The letter says that a system of unification of control of the various branches of education might, however, very well be considered with a view to effecting economies.
The proposal for the abolition of the Dunedin and Wellington training colleges is the subject of another letter. If it is found necessary to reduce the cost of running the training colleges, ththe letter says, each college should bear its proportion of the amount it is desired to save. •
