CRISIS IN CHINA
PEACE NEOTIATIONS IMPERILLED. CRITICAL STAGE TO-DAY. Shanghai, March 31. Peace negotations here approached a crisis to-night after a sharp skirmish between Japanese and Chinese forces at Chiawfanmiao earlier in the day. Chinese and Japanese military leaders still were far apart on truce terms. The Chinese newspapers predicted that the conference would collapse. A Chinese spokesman said the parleys might reach a critical stage to-morrow, when they are to be resumed without definite recommendations from either side as be discussed.
A Japanese officer, meanwhile, sought to wipe out in traditional fashion by suicide what he considered the dishonour he had brought upon the army by allowing himself to be captured. Major Noboru Kuga was captured by te Chinese during the fighting around Kiangwan. Released to-day, he went back immediately to the scene of his capture and ended his life.
