H.B.J.C. MEETING OPENS ON SATURDAY THIS MORNING'S TRIAL GALLOPS The approaching autumn meeting of the H.B.J.C. promises to be a very successful one. Tho track is in excellent order, and the lawns are a picture. The racing on Saturday promises to be par excellence. The Hastings Citizens’ Band, fresh back from its victorious tour to the band contest, will be in attendance, and will bo playing a special programme that alone will be worth hearing. The Hon. A. W. Hamilton, Minister of Internal Affairs, will in all probabiltiy be present. With the gate charges down to a minimum, and the ten shilling totalisator in vogue, and the first race not starting until 12.30, excuses will be hard to find for not turning up. The fields are of convenient size, and the quality up to the average. This morning’s track notes appear below, and in to-morrow evening’s issue a full review of the fields will appear. TRACK NOTES. With so many of the local acceptors having raced this week, there was not a great deal of fast work this morning. • • • Goshawk ran once round on the plough with lOst. or more on his back in 1.45}. He 'was going much better than of late. • « • Llandudno ran half a mile on his own, but only his immediate connections timed him. 1 • • e Gold Ruler, Gold Mag and Luna Lux were companions in a six-furlong gallop (the latter only going five and a half) in 1.17}. The two former finished well ahead of Luna Lux, with Gold Mag doing his task iu an attractive manner. * « • Whakaue, with a big weight in tho saddle, went once round on the plough, the last five furlongs taking 70 secs. • • • Rapallo was too good for Pikeke over a mile on the course proper in 1.45— a very fair effort. Lady Gain did half a mile on her own in 52 secs, comfortably. Lady Makere was ever so much better than Chatter On over five furlongs on the plough in 65 secs. • • • Hunting Moss was not galloped, but worked well. • • • Speed lived up to his name by dashing over five furlongs in 62} secs —an attractive sprint. The Hastings track will suit the Diacqunod two-year-old better than the Waipukurau course.
« • • Blue Boy ran away from Miss Gain over half a mile on the course proper in 50} secs. The former is coming on. Margaret Rose suffered a reverse, this time at the hands of Princess Bell, over five furlongs on the plough in 64} secs. The latter is coming on. Malahat, looking well, was restricted to pace work. His trip has done him no harm, and in the Cup on Saturday he will prove a serious contender. His stable mate, Tai Ao, was given a similar task. He is engaged in two races on Saturday, but is destined 'for the open flying. Court Lady,' very much on the light side, wah given slow work. She will find the distance this week-end in her favour in comparison to the tenfurlongs last Monday. • • • Master Cynic, since coming here, has tucked up, and appears to be on a hunger strike. • • • Fondle was not fully extended, but went nicely over five furlongs on the plough. She is enjoying an unlucky run, but it certainly cannot last for much longer. Her half-sister, Squeeze, who will not be racing until next yeek, ran three furlongs on the course proper in a tick under 37 secs. • • • Ex Dono, on the same track, did three-quarters of a mile in I.lB—- — than many thought he could do. Teller, on the plough, ran half a mile in 50} secs—a very fair effort. On the same course Cuticle took a second slower. Hunting Cry, who could not be started the second day at. Auckland on account of having been galloped on in the Easter Handicap, has now recovered, and was quite sound in his slow work. The H.B. Stakes will see him at a very short price. • • • Freeze did six furlongs on the plough in 1.24. She will contest the H. Stakes. R. Gregory was in on Wednesday with Sum Up, Lalla Quex, Royal Flier, and Royal Dash, and all were given working gallops. Lady Spy may not be started in the Heretaunga Handicap, as her stable mate, Sum Up, may bo relied upon. Royal Hunting broke 50 secs, for half a mile on the course proper. “• ELLERSLIE GALLOPS. Auckland, March 31. Beautiful weather prevailed during training operations at Ellerslie this morning, but owing to heavy fog a number of early gallops could not be timed. All fast work was done on No. 1 track, on which the poles were five feet out from the rails. The going was excellent, and some fast times were recorded, tho best efforts being those of Goldeu Wings, Sea Euler, Cadland, and Fiji, while Puriri Park and King’s Archer also performed well. Te Money completed a six furlong task in 1.34 1-5 Corinax covering the same distance in 1.28 2-5, going easily throughout. Rose Latour was several lengths in front of Spring Abbey over a mile in 1.49 1-5, the last seven furlongs in 1.38 2-5. The Foley Memorial candidates, Awaken and Sir Mond, hit out very freely over a mile in I. 2-5. There was little between them Silvermine was too good for Imamint over six furlongs in 1.17 4-5. Neil did strong work over a round, taking 1.28 4-5 for the last six furlongs Sea Ruler sprinted half a mile, running the last three furlongs in 36 4-ssec. This was a good effort. Golden Wings jumped off at the halfmile, running the first furlong in a
shade under 12sec, and competed the task in 48 3-ssec. R. McTavish rode him, so he would be carrying a fair weight. He was going nicely at the end. Cadland and Fiji were companions over five furlongs, and after running the first two furlongs in 26sec registered 1.3 3-5 tor the distance. They both worked well, but Fiji, on tho outside, impressed most. Standfast was sent seven furlongs, tho last six in 121. This horse louka exceptionally well Gay Cockade was sent over a round in 1.56, the last six furlongs taking 1.22. Lady Quex and Hampton Park ran the first two furlongs in 26sec aud completed five furlongs in 1.4 2-5. Vandyke and Royal Survey were in front of Operatic after completing seven furlongs in 1-33. Tarporley aud Desert Star jumped off at the six-furlongs post, running the first three iu 39sec and covering the full distance in 1.18 2-5, Tarporley finished on better. Lucy Rose and Karaugapui got to the end of seven furlongs iu 1.31 2-5, Luey Rose being in front. Llanore displayed plenty of speed over hall a mile in 49 3-ssec. Puriri Park had Easter Time and Gibraltar as companions over six furlongs, and he was holding them safely at the finish. They ran the first two in 25 3-ssec, three in 38sec, and the full distance in 1.18. They all did their work well and could have registered better time. Tho best six furlongs of tbe morning was recorded by King’s Archer in 1.17 3-5 He worked particularly well and is in first-rate condition. SYDNEY YEARLING SALES. Kellow, of Melbourne, for the Heroic—Willow Queen colt, namely, 1,050 guineas. New Zealand buyers were not pronminent as in former years. Mr. J. M. Sampson paid 200 guineas for the Rampion—Downsouth colt and W. R. Kemball 70 for the Night Patrol-iStcllaris colt.
