JOB AS HUSBAND
WHY A MAN MARRIED. A man who stated that he married because he had no work and wanted someone to keep him was said by Judge Woodcock at the Leeds County Court lately to have found a new form of employment. The case was one in which A. Arlick was sued on a judgment summons for a debt of £6l. He said that his wife had no money of her own, but received an allowance from her own married children. The judge: Does your wife pay you anything for having married her?— (Laughter.)
Arlick: She gives me 2/6 a week for cigarettes. The judge: I think you ought to forego the cigarettes and pay 2/6 toward this debt. Later, his Honour observed: “Apparently he has got a job as a husband and gets 2/6 a week. That is the only salary he gets for being her husband.” An order for payment of one shilling a month was made.
