N.S.W. FINANCE ANOTHER DEFAULT AHEAD. STATE’S “GRAVEST CRISIS.” Sydney, March 29. The High Court roservoU in the case in which the New South Wales Government is seeking a declaration that the Financial Agreement Enforcement Act is ultra vires. Tasmania and Victoria also intervened.
The “Sun” says that if the High Court upholds the I aancial Agreement Enforcement Act the Lang Government will face the gravest financial crisis in its stormy career. A million pounds for April interest, plus exchange, falls duo this week-end and default in payment. is considered inevitable.
The “Sun’s” Canberra correspondent says that should the Federal Government decide on immediate action it will be possible to issue an attachment proclamation under the Enforcement Act within an hour or so of the High Court’s decision. Sufficient Cabinet Ministers are in Melbourne to constitute the Executive Council, over which Sir William Irvine, as deputy for the Governor-General will preside.
MR. BAVIN RESIGNS. LEADERSHIP OF N.S.W. OPPOSITION. Sydney, March 29. Mr Bavin to-night announced his retirement from the leadership of the Parliamentary United Australia Party. He pointed out that he had been in ill health for some time and his doctors advised him to rest. Mr Bavin will retain his position in Parliament. A meeting of the party will be held next Tuesday, when his successor will be chosen.
