CIVIL SERVICE PETITION
CIRCULATED IN HASTINGS. In regard to the report of the petition being signed in Hastings and only three •inclined to sign, the reason of those who declined to sign should have been given. We have learned that it was not that they were in favour of any “cuts’’ in wages or salaries, but that on principle, they could not sign as they had found it necessary to cut their own staffs’ wages, and they had to be consistent.
