ENEMY OF BLACKBERRIES
BLIGHT AT NELSON. A farmer at Belgrove, Nelson, Mr E. C. Hoult, has exhibited a branch of blackberry which was considerably affected by a yellow-coloured powdery substance on the reverse side of the leaves Mr Hoult has noticed the growing effect of the substance on blackberries in the Belgrove district for four years and his observations are that the older leaves are attacked hardest and the seeds are prevented from maturing. No bushes have been noticed to die out, but many Income very sickly. Mr Hoult considers that the blight is siiu< lar to that reported bv Mr J. H James, of Saies, North Auckland, where the yellowish powder is spreadtg rapidly on the blackberry. The sves first show small yellowish spots, •nd then underneath become covered grub a yellowish powilvry infection.
