Scenes unparalleled since Pilate held the Roman Games at Caesarea were witnessed at the opening in the presence of 25,000 spectators of the first Jewish Olympiad known as the Maceabiad, in which teams from Britain, Australia, Europe' aud America are participating. Three thousand Jewish athletes marched in procession through the streets, many carrying pigeons symbolising the twelve tribes of Israel. These carried the news of the opening of the games to various destinations in Palestine.
