ALLEGED THEFT OF MONEY
CAMP COOK CONVICTED. By Telegraph—Press Association Wellington, Mar. 30. George Alfred Harris, aged 40, who was arrested at Wellington last week where he was employed as a barman, was charged to-day with the theft of £l3 14/8 belonging to the Public Works Department. It was stated that £lO in notes and a cheque for £3 14/8 was given him by the engineer at a camp between Napier and Gisborne, where he was employed as cook. He cleared out, and was not located till last week.
For the accused counsel said there were certain amounts owing to him by certain of the men. The accused and tho men were continually quarrelling, and the culmination came on tho day the engineer gave him the money. The wages owing to tho accused were more than the amount he had taken. Harris was convicted and ordered to come up for sentence within twelve months if called upon, and ordered to make restitution.
