ON AND AROUND THE GREENS THE CHAMPION FOURS. SURPRISE DEFEATS. (By "Roamer.”) The champion fours contest commenced on the Waipukurau green last Saturday, and will be continued on the St. Leonard’s green next Saturday. The first three rounds produced some surprise defeats, the most notable being that of Bull (Bluff Hill) who failed to gain one win. On paper Bull appeared to have an exceptionally strong team, but on the day they were off their game. It would be no surprise to see them in winning form next Saturday. Godber (St. Leonards) also failed to notch a win. The Waipukurau Eis not as keen as St. Leonards, his may account for Godber's all. This team will do better in the next three rounds. Evans (Kia To*) and McCarthy (Port) were only able to win two games. Only one to win three. Benson (Waipawa) was the only one to win three games. The team was at the top of its form, and played really good bowls. They may find it harder to win on St. Leonards green, though the rain will be in their favour, as the green will now be on the slow side. Haldane (Waipukurau), Crombie (Havelock North), Venables (Wairere), Bissell (Napier), and Parkinson (Hastings) gained two wins each.
Havelock's Last-minute Entry. It was pleasing to see Havelock putting in a team for the champion fours, although it was a last-minute thought This action gave general satisfaction, and obviated a bye being played each round. A word to Havelock: Don’t forget that the pairs and singles championships have yet to be played, and entries should be put in early to save inconvenience. The Rotorua Tourney.
The ebove tourney commenced on Monday, and at time of writing the result of only one round was to hand. This showed that the two teams from Hastings, skipped by Maher and Warren respectively were decisively beaten. However, all bowlers here will hope they will fare better in the remaining rounds. Electric Light Tourney. The electric light tourneys conducted by the St. Leonards Club in alternate weeks are proving very popular, and last week 10 teams took part. The games were thoroughly enjoyed, and all present expressed the hope that the tourneys will be continued. The club was very gratified at seeing two rinks from Omaranui present. The visitors did not win, but they evidently enjoyed themselves. Let’s hope they will be there for the next tourney, tourney. The Hint Taken. It was mentioned in these columns last week that many clubs did not start games punctually. I understand that one club in Hastings took the matter in hand immediately and decided on peompt starting in the future. This is as it should ba. Cocoanut at Bobber Mats? At different times the question crops up as to whieh is the better mat, the coooanut or rubber. It seems to be the general opinion that the eocoanut mat should be abolished. One of the reasons is that the eocoanut mat has not the same gripping power as the rubber mat, and is likely to shift when a fast drive is made, the feet go from under, and stability disappears. There is no doubt that this is so, and elnbs using coeoanut mats would need to consider the matter. The Bridge Carnival.
His Majesty the King will open the great Sydney Harbour Bridge on Saturday, March 19, and the bowlers of that famous city are celebrating it by conducting a rinks tournament during the following week and a singles tournament a week later. It now seems fairly certain that a reasonably strong party will go from New Zealand, for eight or nine from Auckland alone have already signified their intention of competing, and probably the executive of the New Zealand Bowling Connell are working up a similar interest in the South Island. It is very evident that the Sydney authorities are going to a lot of trouble to ensure an enjoyable time for all visitors, whether bowlers or not, for four very attractive combined tours are arranged, at prices ranging from £34 to £62, and for those who stay in Sydney all the time it would cost even less. Sydney Wants to See Them.
The Sydney newspapers make very kindly references to New Zealand. Mr. B. T. Harrison, otherwise known as Boomerang,” bowling critic of the Sydney "Referee,” seems to have a happy recollection of his visit to the Dominion tournament in Wellington three years ago, followed by Rotorua and Auckland, for he is always touching en New Zealand in some connection. In his last issue he is looking forward to Norrie Bell taking a rink to the bridge carnival, and then continues: "A real clash in Australia had never taken place between New Zealand and Australia until Alex Robertson earns along, and he proved as tough as anyone could wish. And why not Max Walker, Ernie Harraway, Arthur Parsons, etc.? A lot is heard abont New Zealand players, but Sydney wants to see them.”
