BUILDING IN NAPIER

JANUARY PERMITS. Building for which permits were issued by the Napier Borough Council during the month just ended amounted to £48,079, compared with the small sum of £3113 in the same month of last year, when, of course, there were no extensive building activities as is the caso now arising out of the earthquake. In the month just ended there was a total of 26 permits issued, most of the work being of a permanent nature and including some buildings of considerable size. The principal works for which permits were issued are the Napier Brewery Co.’s new Central Hotel at the corner of Emerson and Dalton streets (£21,976), the Masson House Syndicate’s shops and offices in Dalton street (£5982), the Hawke’s Bay Hospital Board’s two new wards and service block at the Napier Hospital site (£5300), the reconditioning of Hukarere Maori Girls’ School in Napier Terrace (£3000), Mr H. Pirie’s shops and offices in Emerson street (£3000), the United Friendly Society’s shops in Emerson street (£1675), and the Hawke’s Bay Education Board’s additional rooms at the Napier Central School in Napier Terraco (£1001). Since the earthquake on February 3 the amount of building which has been done in the town is now well over the £300.000 mark, the actual figure being £336,550. The value of permits issued Inst month was the third highest since the earthquake, the two previous higher months being July, .when the value was £79,705, and September, with £59,143.
