FIRES
TWO OUTBREAKS IN HASTINGS. TENT AND CONTENTS TOTALLY DESTROYED. The Hastings Fire Brigade had to split its forces this morning and attend to two outbreaks at the one time. The first call was to a rubbish fire which had got out of control in a section belonging to Dr. Macdonell, in Nelson street. The flames spread to the dry grass and within a minute there was a great blaze. Fortunately the brigade succeeded in keeping the fire within the boundary fences and little damage was done. While working on this outbreak assistance was required at Ellis street, where a tent was afire. The owner (Mrs. Wrighton) of the property was in town doing some shopping, and it appears that during her absence a four-year-old boy found a box of matches and was playing with them in the tent when they ignited. The child, fortunately, escaped uninjured, but the tent and its contents were totally destroyed. The surrounding grass was also burnt and necessitated the use of the brigade hoses.
