N.Z. CHAMPIONSHIPS. STEDMAN BEATEN BY BARNETT. By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright. Auckland, January 28. The national singles champion, Stedman, of Auckland, was decisively defeated at the New Zealand tennis championships by the Canterbury colt, Barnett, who last week attracted much attention by successive victories in the Wilding Shield matches. Although the champion played beautiful shots, he was far too erratic to hold Barnett, who was as steady as ever, and coolly returned all Stedman’s powerful drives. Stedman did not attempt to go into the net. The match was soon over, and never looked like being closely contsted. Results:— MEN'S SINGLES. Fourth Round.
