PLUNKET SHIELD CRICKET

OTAGO v. CANTERBURY. BLUNT UNBEATEN AT 338. By Telegraph—Press Association. Christchurch, Dec. 29. The Plunket Shield cricket match was resumed in hot weather. Otago’s second innings closed for 589 after twenty-fiye minutes’ play to-day, with Blunt still not out with 338. Hawksworth, his partner in the last-wicket stand, got his leg in front to a straight one from Merritt. Blunt batted for 106 minutes for 21. Canterbury are left to get 279 to win. Later. At 12.30 Canterbury had scored 46 runs without the loss of a wicket— Hamilton, not out, 29; Kerr, not out, 13; extras 4.

Hamilton and Kerr opened steadily, and made 20 in 20 minutes. Badcock used the leg theory against Kerr, with seven men on that side. Smith also bowled with a similar object, and this policy kept the batsmen quiet. The ball was bumping occasionally, and Hawksworth received a nasty blow on the chest once. Hamilton reached 20 when Kerr had six. Hamilton then had a “life” off Badcock, Blunt missing a chance in the slips. Dunning relieved Smith, and Hamilton hit his first for three. Then Kerr survived a leg before appeal. He got double figures with four off Dunning. The fielding was keen. Blunt, in all, hit 41 boundaries. He gave two chances only, which were exceedingly hard. Canterbury’s runs came slowly and at the luncheon adjournment two wickets, those of Hamilton and Roberts, had fallen for 81. Scores: Hamilton, l.b.w. b Badcock, 30; Kerr, not out, 36; Roberts, b Dunning, 9; Talbot, not out, 1; extras 5. WELLINGTON TEAM v. CANTERBURY. Wellington, December 29.
