OTANE
.(Own Correspondent.) The traffic returns for the Otane railway station for the month ending December 5 were as follow.—Outward: Cattlo 414, sheep 20,036, goods 260 tons, revenue £829 Ils 9d. Inward: Cattle 6, timber 2560 feet, goods 83 tons, revenue £B6 11s 4d. The Assembly Hall and main building of the Te Aute College are now nearing completion, and will be ready for the opening of the school in February. Three new dormitories have been erected in wood, two being used last term for sleeping quarters for tho students, and one for science work for the last period.
The settlers of the new Pukekura block, recently opened up, are to be congratulated on tho progress they have made in so short a time. Five very fine dwellings have been erected, many fences are completed, and farming operations are in full swing. A satisfactory percentage of lambs has been sent to the works. Considering the dry season also those engaged in dairying have had a satisfactory run. The road to the settlement is very Interesting with its picturesque scenery. A dangerous approach across the railway, the narrowness of the road and the sharp bends require expert driving. Th * Christmas holidays have passed, many local families spending a happy time at Kairakau beach. Ideal weather conditions for bathing continues, and crowds also have enjoyed the shady trees and waters of the Patangata river.
