AMATEUR ATHLETICS

HASTINGS CLUB’S FIXTURE ELECTRIC LICHT MEETING. SOME KEEN CONTESTS. Amateur athletics, almost throughout the whole district, are gaining in popularity, and more public interest is being evinced at the present time than there has been for a very considerable time. The Hastings Amateur Athletic and Cycling Club’s electric light meeting held in Nelson Park last evening gave another instance of this. The meeting was a highly successful one, and the racing was of a very high standard. The usual splendid handicapping was responsible for some excellent find very dose finishes, arid throughout the whole programme there was only one false start, the fields being sent away in each case with no trouble. The cycling events were a feature of the vvc.u'ng’s sport, Gane’s performunco particularly being a wonderful example of well judged riding. Ho captured the three mile event in splendid style. The following are the details:— 100 yards primary schoolboys.—McNaughton 1, Ewing 2. Time, 12secs. 220 yards handicap.—First heat: Cameron (14) 1, Fulford (12) 2, Callinan (20) 3. Time, 22secs. After six laps, during which Gane on scratch and Stephens on 50 had gained considerably on the bunch, Lee went out to the front and made a break on the field. Mapuhi went after him and caught him after another lap, and then Gane and Stephens gradually closed up the gap. After the tenth lap Gane was in third position and Stephens fifth, with a length between each of the first five riders. The Hst lap was a great sprint, and Gane went to the front to win by six lengths with Stephens two lengths ahead of Lee in third place. Throwing discus.—Callinan (scr) 84ft
