TOWN BOARD AFFAIRS REBUILDING OF HALL. LOAN APPROVED. At the Taradale Town Board meeting last evening there were present Messrs R, D. Kelly (chairman), J. Gilmour, A. V. Danvers, J. Williamson, W. Howard, and C. 11. Williams. The chairman welcomed Mr Danvers and congratulated him on his election to the board. A vote of sympathy was passed to the relatives of the late Mr George Brown, for many years a member of the board, and appreciation expressed of his services. The Commercial Bank advised that overdraft interest had been lowered to 6i per cent on the board’s general account. Tho Waipukurau Borough Council wrote inquiring whether the board had met with success in its application for a loan under the Hawke’s Bay Earthquake Act. —The clerk's reply was read and approved. The Hawke’s Bay Automobile Association, in rel-‘ion to the motorists’ camp at Otatara, advised that signboards would bo forwarded in the course of a few days.—lt was decided to ask the association to make a cash donation towards the improvements. Mr J. H. Absolum wrote thanking the board for nominating Lim for a further term as representative on the Howard Estate Advisory Board. Tho Loans Board notified that a loan of £2500 had been approved for rebuild' the Town Hall under the Hawke’s Bay Earthquake Act. the balance of the money required to be raised on the open market at 5i per cent. The loan of £2500 would be free of interest for five years, after which 4 per cent would be payable.—A formal resolution was passed authorising the board to borrow the sum of £2500 for the rebuilding of the Town Hall. This resolution will be confirmed on the 22nd instant. The chairman reported that the preparation of the necessary plans were well under way, and he thought that the board would soon be in a position to call tenders for the new hall. He was of the opinion that a very good, serviceable building would be erected at a much smaller cost than was at present anticipated. The Rev. Father Aubrey was granted the use of the park for a sports gathering on the 19th instant. The Hawke's Bay Power Board forwarded a copy of the report relative to the new tariff for bulk supply to the Napier and Hastings boroughs. OVERSEER’S REPORT. The clerk and overseer (Mr W. G. Jarvis) reported as follows: — “Roads: Patching was done on the bitumen seal along the Main road, and the filling where subsidence occurred from the earthquake has been given a coat of tar and shingle. Cleaning the eastern side of this road was completed and thC footway cleared up to the camping grounds. Willows and fescue on Osier road are now being grubbed ■out. With the exception of a few corrugations all roads arc in good order. “Drains: Drains in Main, Guppy’, O’Down, Moeller and Redclyffc roads have been cleaned; also Taipo creek. “Motorists’ camp: An artesian well has been sunk, conveniences erected and the long grass cut. A supply of water has also been procured from Mr Piconc’s .well for stock grazing on the reserve. Open fireplaces will bo provided for campers and pienic parties, and a gate placed at the entrance. An application has been made to the Automobile Association for the promised signboards as the grounds are now being used by visiting motorists who experience a little difficulty in locating the reserve 'owing to the absence of direction signs. “Timber, etc., salvaged from Town Hall: This is now being sorted out and classed in order that as much as possible may be used in the new hall. “Post office facilities: An extremely awkward position exists at the local post office owing to the want of a private room where the public may interview .the postmaster. At th e present time any business of a private nature must be transacted in full hearing of other persons at the public counter. This is not a new matter, but the need is accentuated owing to the growing confidential information in respect to income, etc., that must be dealt with. Pressure should be brought to bear on th e department to remedy this position ■of affairs, which should not be allowed to continue. “Rates: The total of rates struck for the current year was £2676, of which amount £lll5 has been collected. The amount of last year’s rates outstanding on March 31 was £623. This amounthas now been reduced to £l9B, to which the penalty of 10 per cent, will be added.”
