HANDLING OF FROZEN MEAT
REDUCED CHARGES SOUGHT. HARBOUR BOARD UNABLE TO DO SO. The question of reduced charges for the handling of frozen meat was raised at a meeting of the Napier Harbour Board yesterday afternoon as a result of a letter from the New Zealand Meat Producers’ Board, which sought a re duction in an endeavour to assist the position of the farmers. The meeting decided to reply stating that owing to the expense which had beeu incurred as a result of the earthquake, it was not possible to consider reducing charges. The letter from the Meat Producers' Board stated that at the recent annual meeting a resolution was carried that it should go into the question of what reductions in charges had been effected by tho various harbour boards as a result of the general reduction in wages. The Meat Producers’ Board therefore inquired what reductions the Napier Harbour Board had been able to effect in regard to the charges levied in respect to frozen meat handled over the wharves and overseas vessels loading frozen meat. The chairman, Mr A. E. Jull, M.P., moved that a reply be sent stating that while the board appreciated the necessity of reducing charges, it was impossible to do so owing to the board’s present position due to the earthquake. The suggestion was made by Mr T. M. Geddis that the board should also point out that if the class of vessel that could berth at the Breakwater was sent, there would be a saving effected of at least 10s per ton. Mr Jull: Yes, we could point out that facilities are available for the small class of insulated vessel. Captain H. Anderson then raised the question of loss which might be sustained to the board. ‘‘Are you opposed to this suggestion J” asked Mr P. F. Higgins, of Captain Anderson. Captain Anderson: I don’t oppose anything; only you. Mr Higgins: And the Breakwater. The chairman’s motion was then carried with the addition of the suggestion made by Mr Geddis.
